We have an obligation under Federal law to protect your tax data. In particular, the IRS requires us to follow Federal Trade Commission data safeguard regulations. One of those regulations involves the encryption of data when sent over the Internet.
We comply with this regulation by using ProtonMail®, a free encrypted email service based in Switzerland and subject to Swiss Privacy Laws.
We require all our tax clients to send us documents that contain personal identifying information, tax data, or confidential information over the Internet using a ProtonMail® email account.

General correspondence, which does not involve personal identifying information, tax information, or confidential information, can be emailed to our non-secure email account: email@example.com.
First, communications sent between two ProtonMail® email accounts are automatically encrypted.
Second, ProtonMail® offers a basic account for free, which includes 500MB storage, 150 messages per day, and Limited Support.
Third, no spam advertising. ProtonMail® is a subscription-only-based service. Its system has no ability to access the contents of emails, and, as a result, ProtonMail® does not engage in target advertising.
Fourth, and lastly, we believe ProtonMail® complies with FTC data safeguard regulations and preserves the federally authorized tax practitioner-client privilege under IRS Code Section 7525 because its system is designed to minimize the risk of third-party disclosure by encrypting data at all steps within its secure server network.
